Scrum Con 2020

Just a quick note to let folks know that we have started planning Scrum Con 2020 . Many details are still nascent and in flux, but we do have two important ones nailed down: the date and location , so mark your calendars! Date: Saturday February 29, 2020 Location: Silver Spring Civic Building at Veterans Plaza Our new location is in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, and it's a much larger and more modern facility that will be a very pleasant place to spend a day gaming together. Within a block are three large parking garages (free on weekends) and about 20 restaurants, and the red line metro stop is only about two blocks away. [ Google map ] Silver Spring Civic Building in heart of downtown Lovely interior spaces. We've reserved all of the facility's major conference spaces. After selling out a week early last year, we're looking to grow the convention a bit, hoping to offer around 50-75% more games than we did for the last gathering. ...

Painting Progress: Tackling More Terrain

I will not pretend to have enough readers that anybody would notice, but my posting pace has slackened this year. I'll offer the same confessional apologia that opens countless hobby blogs I read: I aspire to do better. I hope to catch up on a number of posts waiting in the wings, particularly those devoted to some of the recent Scrum Club games we held earlier this year. There are hundreds of photos from those games, the best of which I'm excited to eventually share. To help catch up with the backlog, I'll try over the next few posts to curtail some of my long-winded discussions and give the focus over to the photos, the sharing of which is mostly my motivation for even starting this blog. Jebodiah's Shack After my recent foray into painting a box full of 1/72nd scale lizard men, I deliberately went back to my comfort zone of painting larger terrain pieces. I had this piece in the pile for a year or more, picking it up when I discovered some of the cool piece...

'Scrum Club TV' Launches, plus Scrum Con Profiled on 'Tankard Talk'

We don't typically shoot video for our Second Saturday Scrum Club gatherings, but I got tired of seeing those Little Wars TV fellas getting all of the glory, so we're launching our own  Scrum Club TV . I've been impressed by the industrious guys at Little Wars TV , their really cool renovated club house , and the fact that they seduced away Miles Reidy to their ranks just before I had a chance to recruit him as a member of the Second Saturday Scrum Club. Although they seem much more interested in historicals than most of the members of the Scrum Club, I get a real sense that we're kindred spirits, at least in regards to having some really talented members who like to augment the club's gaming with related extra curricular activities. Their Little Wars TV YouTube channel was an inspiration for us to launch something similar that we're calling Scrum Club TV . The plan is to shoot and cut a video after our monthly gatherings that will likely be a post ...

Take the High Road: Making Cheap and Easy Dirt Roads

I have wanted some good roads to add to my games for a while now. My first attempt was a couple of years ago when my standards were a bit lower and I wasn't sure how much I was interested in investing in this new hobby. I bought some PDFs of cobblestone roads that I sized, printed, and glued to felt. The result was okay, but the way my laser printer  produced the roads ended up being quite reflective to the point of almost being glossy looking. The combination of glue, paper, and felt also meant the roads had a wavy consistency and almost always curled at the edges. I used them once or twice but was never happy with them. My sub-par first attempt at making roads for my games using felt strips, glue, and printed designs. You can see how shiny and how wavy and curled at the edges they turned out. I never felt good about putting them on the table for our games and eventually stopped altogether. I've been meaning to take another crack at making some roads now that I have...
